Here we show you how to create, structure, and manage webshop categories in dynamic commerce. This allows you to present your product range clearly and provide your customers with intuitive navigation in the online shop. In every webshop you can create a so-called category tree – a structured overview of your products, as known from classic online shops. This tree can be up to 5 levels deep, allowing you to sort your items flexibly and clearly – for example, by main categories such as “Clothing” and subcategories such as “Men > Jackets > Winter Jackets”. Each category can contain any number of items. Conversely, a single item can also appear in multiple categories simultaneously – exactly as makes the most sense for your customers. Important: Webshop categories are independent and deliberately differ from the categories in Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central. There is no automatic synchronisation between these two structures. In order to assign items to a category at all, webshop items must first be created.

Step 3: Create Level 1 Category

To create a first-level category, select the FastTab “New”. The new entry is inserted above the currently selected row. To enable quick creation and editing of a category, the category overview is already editable in the list. Categories can therefore be entered and edited directly in the list by clicking “Edit List”. In our example, we name the first-level category “Bicycle”. We recommend maintaining the search code at the same time by entering “bicycle” there as well.Since the search code is a URL slug, only lowercase letters (a–z), numbers (0–9), and hyphens (-) are permitted. Special characters such as spaces, umlauts, or punctuation marks are not allowed and must be encoded or replaced.

There, select the menu item “Descriptions” from the drop-down menu that opens and click the FastTab “Edit Category Excerpt”. An editor opens in which you can enter and format text. We recommend repeating the category name as a heading with the style “Heading 1”.

  • Show subcategories: Tiles
  • Show action items: do not show

Step 10: Add Image to Level 1 Category

So that a tile with an image for the subcategories can be displayed in the first-level category, maintain an explanatory image or icon via the FastTab “Edit Category Image”. To do this, navigate via the “Navigate” menu ribbon and “Appearance” to the FastTab “Category Image”. Images in JPEG or PNG format can be inserted here, which are then automatically converted to the correct size.

The list “Webshop Item Categories” opens, containing an overview of all items already assigned. An additional item can be added via the “New” button. In this example, we add the “AeroBurner Driver”. In the FastTab “Process”, the order of items in this list can be changed using the “Move Up” or “Move Down” buttons. If you want to assign multiple items to a category at the same time, you can do so via the “Assign Items” button in the “Actions” menu ribbon. Here, items can be assigned using filters on fields such as description or NAV category code.In our example, we have assigned items to a category. It is also possible to assign items to a category from a webshop item card.

Clicking “Move Left” moves the category one level up, and clicking “Move Right” moves it one level down. This function is particularly useful for making minor changes to the order of categories. To move categories extensively, we recommend creating a new category at the desired position, copying the settings and assigned items from the old category, and then deleting the old category.
